Was I such a great threat that someone would go to all this trouble to keep me out of the Army? Did they have any idea that in doing so, they'd saved me from the two things I most feared?
Wow, what a recollection and very well written. The encounters with powerful institutions over whole we have no sway or influence is traumatic, regardless of how they turn out. Glad you were spared ,and thank you for recording your story for posterity. What a time to be alive that was!
It was indeed. It is only looking back 50 years later that I can see how I was protected and guided. If you were alive then, I'm sure you were as well.
I was born in 1967, so these memories are those of my childhood - but still very vivid even if I did not understand it all. I did end up serving in the Army in the Gulf War, so certainly felt the dread and sorrow of going to war.
